OneDrive

Microsoft's cloud storage — and what it scans

⚠️ Privacy case

Microsoft scans OneDrive files for content that violates its Terms of Service. In 2022, Microsoft began scanning personal photos stored in OneDrive as part of its PhotoDNA and AI-based content scanning — content that is explicitly described as private. Files stored in OneDrive are subject to Microsoft's terms and accessible to Microsoft for compliance, legal, and service improvement purposes.

What it is

OneDrive is Microsoft's cloud storage service, included with Microsoft 365 (1TB) or available free (5GB). It syncs files across Windows devices, integrates with Office apps, and backs up your desktop, documents, and pictures folders automatically on Windows. The integration is deep enough that many Windows users have OneDrive running without realizing it.

What you lose

Honest assessment

OneDrive is one of the easiest Microsoft services to replace because cloud storage is a commodity. Proton Drive, iCloud (for Apple users), and Nextcloud all offer equivalent or better privacy at competitive prices.

Migration steps

  1. Download all OneDrive content to a local drive
  2. Choose your new cloud storage (Proton Drive recommended for privacy)
  3. Upload content to new storage service
  4. Unlink OneDrive from Windows (Settings → Accounts → Sync your settings; also unlink from system tray)
  5. Disable OneDrive auto-start (Task Manager → Startup → Microsoft OneDrive → Disable)
  6. Cancel OneDrive standalone subscription if applicable (usually bundled with Microsoft 365)
