Xbox & Game Purchases
Digital games you bought — and how to own your gaming library
What it is
Xbox is Microsoft's gaming platform spanning hardware (Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One) and PC gaming through the Xbox app for Windows. Digital game purchases, Game Pass subscriptions, and in-game purchases are tied to your Microsoft account. The Xbox Store is DRM-locked — games require a Microsoft account to verify ownership and will not run without it.
What you lose
- Xbox digital game purchases on non-Microsoft platforms
- Game Pass library access when subscription ends
- Xbox achievements and gamerscore
- Xbox-exclusive titles (Halo, Forza, Gears, Microsoft Flight Simulator) on non-Xbox/PC platforms
Honest assessment
Xbox's digital game DRM is similar to PlayStation's and Nintendo's — all console game stores work the same way. Your digital purchases are tied to your account and your hardware ecosystem. The practical difference: Xbox games are also available on Windows PC through the Xbox app, giving you more hardware flexibility than PlayStation or Nintendo. For PC gamers specifically, GOG.com is the meaningful alternative because it sells DRM-free games you actually own.
Alternatives
- GOG.com — The gold standard for PC game ownership. DRM-free games. You download the installer. It runs without any launcher, account check, or internet connection. You own the file like a program on your hard drive. GOG has thousands of titles including major releases. If you're going to buy PC games, GOG is how you actually own them.
- Steam — The dominant PC gaming platform. Not DRM-free (most games require the Steam client), but Steam's market position, long track record, and generous refund policy make it a more stable long-term choice than the Xbox Store. The Steam Deck shows Valve's commitment to hardware diversity. A better alternative to Xbox Store for PC gaming.
- Itch.io — Indie game marketplace. Many games are DRM-free. Strong for independent developers. Not a replacement for AAA titles but excellent for indie games.
- Epic Games Store — Offers frequent free games. Large library. DRM varies by publisher. Better revenue share for developers than Steam. A viable alternative for specific titles.
Migration steps
- Keep your Microsoft account if you want to preserve your game library (free to maintain)
- For future PC game purchases, buy from GOG.com (DRM-free) or Steam (more portable than Xbox Store)
- Cancel Xbox Game Pass if subscribed — library access ends, but separately purchased games stay
- For Xbox-exclusive titles you love, this may be a reason to keep a minimal Xbox presence
- Link Microsoft account to Movies Anywhere for any digital movie purchases
- Cancel Xbox Live Gold / Xbox Game Pass Ultimate if no longer using Xbox hardware
