Audible
Your audiobooks stay — your subscription doesn't have to
Moderate migrationWhat it is
Audible is Amazon's audiobook subscription service ($14.95/month), the dominant platform in audiobooks with a large exclusive catalog. Good news: unlike many subscriptions, audiobooks you purchased on Audible remain accessible even after you cancel — you just lose the monthly credit.
Honest assessment
Audible has by far the largest audiobook catalog and the most Originals. Some titles genuinely aren't available elsewhere. But $14.95/month is steep if you're listening to fewer than 2 books per month — the library is usually the better deal.
What you lose
- Monthly credit (1 credit = 1 audiobook, typically worth $15–40)
- Audible Originals exclusives (some titles are Audible-only)
- Whispersync (listen/read sync with Kindle)
- Member discounts on additional purchases
Data to export first
- Your purchased audiobooks remain in your library after canceling
- To back up locally, use OpenAudible (free, open source) to download DRM-free versions
- Note same legal gray area as Kindle DRM — personal backup, not distribution
How to cancel → Step-by-step guide on CancelFreely
- Log in → Account Details → Cancel Membership
- Amazon will offer a pause option (3 months) and credit bank reminder
- Your purchased titles remain accessible after cancellation
